Start with the land, not the layout
Before you sketch a single corner, confirm what your property allows. A usable personal track can start around half an acre to an acre. A comfortable backyard track is typically 3 to 5 acres, and a pro-style facility wants 10 or more. But acreage is only half the question. Noise is the number-one reason private tracks get shut down, and the buffer between your track and the nearest home can demand more land than the track itself.
Talk to your local planning commission before any earthwork begins. A track may qualify as an "accessory use" only if zoning already permits it. Otherwise you may need a conditional use permit, agricultural zoning, or a minimum setback, sometimes 500 feet from property lines. Where possible, design around the terrain you already have. Use natural slopes for elevation rather than trucking in dirt to fake hills.
Get the soil right
The surface a bike actually rides is soil, and the wrong blend cannot be fixed by shaping. Target a sandy-clay loam, roughly 30 to 40 percent clay to bind jump faces and berms, with the balance sand and silt so it drains and stays tacky. In engineering terms this is a slightly plastic sand-clay-gravel with a plasticity index of about 5 to 15, which the US Army earthwork manual (FM 5-410) calls the most satisfactory unsurfaced wearing surface.
Build in two layers: a compacted clay-rich base that carries load and holds shape, topped with 6 to 12 inches of tilled loam for traction. Pure clay bakes to hardpack and turns slick when wet. Compaction and drainage are what last
Place dirt in thin lifts of 6 to 12 inches rather than big piles, because thick piles bridge and leave voids. Most of your density arrives in about five passes. Keep the soil within roughly 2 to 3 percent of its optimum moisture. A field test borrowed from the FIM course-prep standard: a handful should ball up like bread dough, not crumble or smear.
Water needs somewhere to go. Crown or cross-slope a graded dirt surface at about 4 percent, roughly a half inch of fall per foot of width, which is two to three times what pavement needs. Below 4 percent water sits and softens the base. Above 6 percent the surface erodes. Break long sustained slopes with cross-drains, and route any defined flow under the track with a culvert at least 18 inches across, as detailed in the Maine DEP gravel road manual.
Move dirt smart: cut and fill
The cheapest dirt is the dirt already on your property. Design so the material you cut, from a flat start, corners, or a pond, feeds the material you need to fill for jumps and berms. Remember that dirt swells when dug and shrinks when compacted, so order more than the finished volume plus a contingency. This is exactly where planning on real terrain pays off. Design jumps that ride, not jumps that hurt
Takeoff angle governs trajectory. Near 45 degrees gives maximum distance on flat ground, and less when the landing sits lower. Shape the lip as a smooth curved ramp, never sharp, so it does not buck the rider. Match the landing angle close to the takeoff, then steepen it away from the edge along the descent line, and leave 2 to 3 bike lengths of run-out past the landing. Keep sizes realistic and honest to skill level:
- Beginner: 5 to 10 ft long, 1 to 3 ft tall, spaced 20 to 30 ft.
- Intermediate: 10 to 20 ft long, 3 to 6 ft tall.
- Advanced: 10 to 30-plus ft long, 3 to 10-plus ft tall.
A flat-decked tabletop is the most forgiving feature. A double (a gap to a separate landing) is the least. Never mix a big-bike jump into a beginner line.
Equipment and the build order
A full build leans on a dozer (D3 to D5) for bulk shaping, an excavator (10 to 20 ton) for jump faces, a vibratory roller to seal the base, and a water truck. A backyard floor is a 30 to 45 hp 4WD tractor with a loader, ripper, tiller and drag, plus an 800 to 1,000 gallon water tank. Water is not optional. Dry dirt will not compact. Work in this order:
- Stake the layout on the ground.
- Shape the terrain and build jumps.
- Solidify the base by compacting.
- Water and maintain, especially at landings.
- Keep up ongoing upkeep.
Maintenance and liability
A clay-loam surface can dry to hardpack in an hour or two of heat. Water as it cools and wheel-pack between passes, but avoid over-watering plus deep plowing, which leaves knee-deep ruts. Rip then till, because discing alone leaves a slick hardpan, and drag every session to pull material off the berms and ruts back across the racing line.
On liability, inherent-risk laws that shield track owners exist in only a few states (Arkansas, Texas, and Iowa as of 2026). They cover the normal risks of riding, never negligent design or poor maintenance, and most require posted warning signs. Everywhere else you rely on waivers, an LLC, and insurance.
